First there is the flowering tops of the plant called St John’s Wort; also known as Hypericon, Klamath Weed and Goat Weed. This is an ages old herbal remedy for mental illness, but has also been used as a sedative, a balm against bites and wounds, and a pain killer. Modern herbalists recommend it for use against anxiety, depression and sleep disorders and apply it in the form of a tea or fusion or as a tablet. Medical Scientists are divided about its effect, some agreeing that it may serve some use but others arguing that it is no more effective than a placebo. Some side effects have been reported and it is recommended that a doctor be consulted before use especially if other medication is being used.

I've used St. John's Work for depression and some results, but after taking an SSRI, I think it may have been placebo effect. One is also not suppose to stay on St. John's Wort for longer than 12 weeks, I believe. My dad swore by Sam-E for a while, but then he went back to corporate pharms, too. Since we have both stopped taking everything, mostly due to SSRI side effects.
For anxiety, as many people have said, Valerian works wonders. Kava-Kava is also very calming, as it catnip.
For any herbal products, I'd get a standardized extract.

Here are recommendations that I have personally used. When you are stressed and having trouble sleeping because of it, use Valerian Root. It is the herbal equivalent of Valium. Take it an hour or two before going to bed at a reasonable hour. The reason for this is that Valerian stays in your system and can make you sluggish the following day. Another good sleep remedy is a really strong cup of Chamomile Tea. It has a calming effect and helps you with sleep.
For daytime calming, you may want to get some St. John's Wart extract and put several drops in your bottle of drinking water.
Finally, stay away from coffee and caffeinated drinks until you get your emotions and hormones back in balance. And PRAY, PRAY, PRAY! It really helps.
Look at the reference page that I have listed for more detailed information.

Go to your doctor. Ok, I'm sorry for being cheeky.
Lavender, lemon balm and passion flower. PureCalm contains these herbs. This is more for anxiety. For depression, MindSoothe is good. It contains Hypericum Perforatum (St. Johns Wort) and Passion Flower.

I, too, have used Valerian root for my anxiety (although, my prescription drugs work far better when I'm having a panic attack). St. John's Wort gave me the wickedest heartburn ever...and I never get heartburn!
They make Valerian root in pill form as well as in tea. Obviously, the capsules are more potent.

I use Valerian Root for anxiety. Make sure you get it in "standardized" form. Some say St. John's Wort works for depression, but it never worked for me.
