The difference is a good painting and a bad one. You must do your homework before you begin anything. It's been my experience that abstraction requires more detailed artistic drawing than anything I paint from nature. You do have to work the bugs out before you begin. Even if it appears that the artist has not done anything to prepare before painting I can assure you that he/she has done the work over and over again in their heads. Originality, composition and color are part of the greater whole. It's what we all strive for. An artist who can't draw... what's the point? Be a mechanic.

Some artists are musicians. Some are poets. Many artists dance, while others are marvelous actors. Most of them, probably cannot draw, but they are no less artists than I am.

There are many forms of art. I know many professional graphic desiners that can't draw a stick figure. Some of them make a helluva lot more money than I do.

Anyone who draws is an 'artist'.

The difference is the experience one has, the great quality and your ability to produce your work, the command of prices for your [excellent] craft and amount of people appreciating your work. [some styles of art isn't appreciated by everyone.]
