You have to first get songs into your iTunes Library (by either copying them from CD's, etc., or buying them from iTunes), and THEN you copy (by syncing your iPod to your computer) your songs FROM your computer TO your iPod. Not the other way around. It's a one-way street with your iPod: From your computer to your iPod. If you don't want to use your iPod to listen to music, you can just listen to your music directly from your computer without your iPod being involved at all.
