You're right on this one, he basically won the Baseball Lottery. I remember Malone and Payton from the Lakers a few years back but that was Basketball, they were there the whole year at least, and they didn't even win it. Gagne was supposed to be a solidifying factor in the bullpen but was anything but. Oh well it's all moot now, and now Gagne's got a ring. I'm sure he's happy, but I wonder how much of a factor he feels he really was in getting it done?

Wow, I totally forgot the Red Sox got him at the trade deadline. Yeah, you are absolutely right, he will get his world series bonus, his world series ring, and the right to say he was on a world series winning team, and he did absolutely nothing but sit in the bullpen and eat sunflower seeds.
I dont know of a bigger trade bust to get a free ride, but I have just the opposite. Nomar getting traded a few monthe before the Sox won the series in 04.. That must have hurt his ego a bit huh?

Yes he did pitch in world series game 1, 3 up, 3 down. I was there - I saw it with my own eyes. But then he had a 12 run lead to work with.
I also saw him blow it when the Red Sox came back against LAA on 8/17 to take the lead in the 8th inning only to have Gagme give up 4 run's in the top of the 9th.
He belongs in the National League, which is really just AAAA.

He is definitely one of the biggest free loaders I've seen recently. He pitched once against Cleveland, and didn't even record a single out. He has been absolutely brutal. Something else that comes to mind in terms of free rides is Corey Simon on the Colts when they won the Super Bowl. He didn't even play at all during the season for little to no reason.

Nah, Royce Clayton did. He had more TV time than Curt Schilling in the world series!
That friggin' guy was everywhere the camera was...and he's getting a ring too!
EDIT: BTW, Gagne is a free agent after this season so when they don't resign him (which they'd be crazy to resign him) they will get an extra draft pick as compensation. Think about this, the draft pick they got for letting Pedro go to free agency was...Clay Buchholtz!!!

Well he won't be released, because he is now a free agent.
I'm sure he is actually very pissed off about his performance in a Red Sox uniform. He came in with high expectations, and burned himself out trying to exceed those expectations, and consequently blew it even more!
His performance in the season and in the postseason for the Sox probably cost him anywhere from $5-10 million in contract value from his next team. I'm sure he is not happy about that at all.
Playing in Boston is a big deal, with a lot of pressure, and some people aren't cut out for it. It certainly appears Gagne is one of those that isn't.

He did pitch the ninth inning of the first game of the World Series without giving up a hit! Of course Boston had a 12 run lead so I wasn't too nervous when they brought him in.
If he had at least a 10 run lead then he pitched OK, otherwise forget it! Their other pitcher Lopez was just as bad as Gagne.

free ride indeed... the sox will definitely release him before next season. Gagne was the only weak link in an otherwise strong bullpen

As much as i hate gagne, i think he's gonna have a lot on his shoulders. I'm sure he isnt happy about getting a ring without any contribution to the team. In fact its possible he feels the same as we do and even guilty...

Yeah, that was a bad one. Horrible. That guy is a shell of his former self and he sure stepped in some sh*t to get where he is today. I'd love to see footage of him celebrating in the locker room, covered in champagne. It be like that commercial where the guy is being interviewed after winning the championship. "Team!? I'm not on the team, I'm just here for the Bud Light!"
