Perhaps they are like sea horses. Once the eggs are fertilized they are given to the male to carry. Thats why you never see a pregnant mermaid.

Since the jelly and the pregnant mer-man theories are not so pretty, I've created my own version: they turn human for one night, if they truly fall in love... now, don't all the mermaid enthusiasts feel better?

Mermaids get pregnant the same way that other marine mammals do. Contrary to how they are popularly portrayed, a mermaid has a smooth dolphin-like tail rather than a scaly fish tail.

Just like a normal fish. Fertilisation takes place outside the mother's body, with the male and female fish shedding their gametes into the surrounding water.

Grotty of course there were mermen, hence how they became known as mer-people or merfolk :P.

I am guessing that the folklore didn't really delve that deep into it lol, but people must have assumed they bred like other fish, by laying their eggs.
