When fans get involved it becomes a popularity contest which is fine when the game means nothing (like the Allstar game) but, when it comes to building a team with all the right pieces and with the right chemistry to compete I think it's best we leave that job to the professionals. The last Winter Olympics Canada got stopped by a hot goalie in the one game and just had an overall bad chemistry. I think the last go round it was a mistake to include Bertuzzi over a couple of the young up and coming players though.

Certainly not. Yzerman and Gretzky will be building a team that can play together, as opposed a team of loose stars. So far the only player guaranteed a spot is Sakic, and over the next two years, Yzerman will be conducting several fact-finding trips to see who his teammates will be.
As for your Gretzky comment................it's amazing how quickly people forget about the job he did in putting the 2002 Olympic team and 2004 World Cup teams together. Both of which won Gold I might add.
Sure there were rumours. In 1998, Rob Zamuner was picked over Mark Messier. In 2002, Joe Thornton was left off the team. In 2006 Sidney Crosby was left off the team. One of the problems with being a country like Canada is the top level of your talent exceeds the available space. So, there will always be arguments, and always be second-guessing. That is part of the joy. Gretzky and Yzerman have already said that Sakic will be the team captain of the 2010 team, and I know people questioning whether we should have Sakic on the team (and he has a Chelios-like work ethic and aging process so far). I know people who think Tavares should be on that team at 19 yrs old. Both Gretzky and Yzerman have said the team will contain no rookies. So people can argue that. We have an immense pool of talent to choose from, nobody will be happy.
It's not like were Slovenia where they will have Anze Kopitar and 22 people picked off the streets.

Please, for the love of all that is good, NO!
It would be all fan favourites, not a sound hockey team. You can't just throw a whack of superstars on the ice and expect them to gel. You gotta use a smart hockey mind to run the show, Gretz has proven he can do it, so he had one bad year, big whoop.
Look at the USA dream team a few years back in basketball. They were essentially a failure too. Things happen. Stick to your guns, and NO don't let people vote on it because then you will have morons like the guys who tryed to get Rory Fitzpatrick into the all-star game start up the same kind of thing.

AL-star games don't mean much. You need a GM type to make the selections, ideally he should not be a current NHL GM or coach to remove any bias.
Letting the fans select would result in a team with the most popular players only with no concept of team chemistry or team needs.
You also need an Unbiased coach who does not currently coach an NHL team to avoid the CUJO/Quinn conflict of the past.

To answer the question - no!
Every time there is a bit of controversy about guys who made the team and guys who were left off.
I suspect this will never change considering the talent pool they have to pick from could probably make up 3 gold medal winning teams!

Oh, hell, no...! Let the experts select who gets to play for Team Canada. The All-Star game is an exhibition for the fans, while international games is for national pride. I would hate to see Canada come in last because some idiot (most likely in Toronto) created three million accounts and voted Bryan McCabe into the team.

Absolutely not! The Olympic hockey team needs to play well together, as well as work well for the coach. We can't select the team by popularity!
