seriously they could be finding a cure for cancer or helping the environment. So what if there is gum on the ground?

There are many scientists doing many different things as there are different people with varying and different opinions about anything such as your concern. Thanks to all of them in this wonderful critical, at times, world. Thanks!

Most science doesn't come cheap. And even when it's free, the scientist himself has to eat, and most would like something to keep the rain off their heads, not to mention at least a few sheets of paper to write any discoveries they might have down.

This means that either a scientist has a 'day job', is independantly wealthy, or is being paid by someone else to look into something of their choosing. This has pretty much always been the case.

The only difference in modern times is who has the money and what they're interested in looking into. Instead of some inherited nobility, we have a lot of wealthy corporations and governments. And while governments may be interested in funding speculative and perhaps unprofitable research such as cures for diseases, corporations want their investments to pay off and make them more money... and the sooner the better.

So if you want a cure for cancer, talk to your congressmen and pay your taxes. If you want non-stick bubblegum, just keep buying the latest whiz-bang gadgets. It's not a matter of greed - some scientists practically do live in poverty to continue the work they love - it's just that even that is not enough when equipment to perform research can sometimes cost millions of dollars.

Science is a marvelous thing. You never know, what if eventually the cure for cancer comes from the non-stick bubblegum? New discoveries are always right under our nose. You should never question a scientists discovery since that discovery is one step closer to the future.
