I can see the Yankees doing numerous things,
a.) going back on their word for A-Rod. best player in the game, and you'll just let him walk? I find that hard to believe Cash and everyone else will just let him walk, although the $$$ is a big issue.
b.) staying 'in house'. letting vechionacci/betemit share time at third this upcoming year, all depending on Spring Training/injuries.
c.) sign Lowell. he's a former yankee. he's a boston hero, right now. World Series MVP, Yankees have loved in the past to get big FA's. I personally hope they don't go this road, yes we'll get a good FA 3B, but $$$ and length could be a concern.
My honest opinion is to stick 'in-house' and give Vechionacci and Betemit a chance since Duncan has moved to first base, since last year.
First base is also another question. Phillips was injured, also is he signed for next year? Giambi at first scares me. As well as if Bobby Abreu will get picked up. If not, we'll need a RF too.
Ideas?

Internally -They have Betemit and their 1st round pick from a few years back Eric Duncan.
Externally- They could trade for Miguel Cabrara or Mike Lowell is a FA.
I think the best move would be to play Betimet at third, try to re-sign Rivera, Pettite and Posada. Trade Melky and Hughes for Santana.
They have enough offense. The reason why they don't win is because their pitching sucks.

I think the more important question is-
What are the Yankees options for batting in the #4 spot?
Love him or hate him, A-rod leaves a big hole in the lineup that really can't be filled by another current Yankee (Giambi is finished, Matsui isn't a clean-up hitter, Posada lacks the power, etc, etc...) So, who do they put in the 4-hole?
As for lineup- probably Damon,Jeter, Abreu, ????, Matsui, Posada, Cano, a DH or outfielder and 1st baseman to be named later (Duncan?)

I hope the Red Sox don't go after a-rod after the stunt he pulled last night. That was a real chicken bleep move to announce that during a world series game. Listen to Peter Gammon rip into him on Sports Center today.

Mike Lowell of the Red Sox. Red Sox fans, if Lowell were to sign with the Yankees, would he receive a warm welcome when he comes back to Fenway Park when Yankees & Red Sox play each other

Even though i hope it doesn't happen i wouldn't be suprised one bit if the Yankee ownership takes back what they said & go after A-Rod anyway.
