It is fine for men. I got my teaching license and there were just as many men than woman in my classes for secondary education. Elementary school is different, more woman take that than men. I think it has to do with it being more of a parenting roll. And probably has alot to do with stereo types.

I did get my teaching license, but I strayed from the field when I found that I could make more than twice as much in other fields with my degree.

It is good for people who like kids. Some women choose it because it is traditional women's work they get same vacations as kids. Women usually are the daycare workers too and the early elementary years. I didn't have men teachers until 4th grade. My sister in law started teaching because she was a class volunteer but went to school and got her teaching certificate about 30 years ago and has never taught above 3rd grade because she likes the little kids. I personally couldn't deal with the little ones all day everyday and would only teach kids who could wipe their own noses.

It is a great profession for men. Many students come from one parent homes, which is usually the mother, Male teachers can be good male role models for these students.

Women tend to naturally have more nurturing demeanors conductive to creating more creative, gentle and open learning environments, but men can make great teachers, too. Generally, my male colleagues had fewer discipline problems than the female teachers simply because a man tends to have a louder, stronger voice and more commanding classroom presence. (You know, with our traditional role of the man being the disciplinarian.) Female teachers have to work a little harder at obtaining this kind of presence.

Men have to be careful these days as they interact with students as any kind of touch can be potentially career-ending--whether anything inappropriate actually happens or not.
