Many criminals rely on their crimes for income- burglars and robbers for example, are unlikely to hold steady jobs with paychecks. Most muggers don't pay into social security...

Nice Idea-- Except for one thing. The people who commit most crimes aren't employed. If they were they wouldn't be commiting crimes.
The liberal who thought up the name for prisons 'Department of Corrections' obviously didn't know what they were doing. As you stated the present system is a failure. Most criminals are in jail because they have no skills that are legal to use.
How about instead of providing them with TV, exercise equipment, and other amenities and incarcerating them for a set period of time we require them to learn a new skill as a condition of their release. After they learn that new skill they get posted and employers can interview them and hire them. If no one hires them they aren't released. If they commit a new crime they go back in and have to learn another skill and the process starts over. Until they have an attitude adjustment they stay locked up. They have to want to get out. And they have to start by admitting they screwed up. And the screwing up wasn't that they got caught.
Make 'doing your time' a thing of the past. Make it changing your attitude.

I don't think making them pay a hundred bucks a week would work out. People would go into hiding, work under the table, or file for bankrupcy. Plus would you like your rapists to be out and about raping others and just hand you over a couple of bills? Would that be justice?

That is what CIVIL court is for...
Murders and Rapists should simply be executed, and thieves and other felons should be put to hard-labor.
This MIGHT work with certain minor crimes. Violent criminals certainly aren't going to be dropping cash out of their "pay-checks" even IF they find legal employment.
Want to limit the "waste" of tax-dollars ? Stop giving criminal's cable-tv and other perks, and bring back prison farms and prison factories.

Because then the murderer is out working and possibly killing your family. You want the sex offender who raped a little girl living next door to you while he's working to pay the family a hundred bucks a week?!?

Yes thats a great idea. Sorry sir, but the death of your wife and kids at the hands of a mass murderer is unfortunate. Here is you compensation check. Turns to mass murderer, "BAD BOY" now get out of here!
News report: President Hillary Clinton made the following comments earlier today. Due to the larger than expected number of payouts in the form of compensation we have determined that we need to raise taxes on all those making over $18000 per year. Its only a slight increase to 75%

Prisons are a complete failure because prison isn't prison. All prisons should be 23 hour a day solitary confinement. NO violence should be tolerated . No rape in jail. No drugs. All you get are books and an hour for yoga a day. No weightlifting either.

That would be a good idea for some offenders but there are some people that need to be locked up. I would help ease some overcrowding, making room for the ones that need to be there.
I don't understand why we release murderers and rapists to lock up drunks and drug addicts.

Yeah, thats it - let's release all those child molesters and repeat criminals and serial killers and ask them instead to get a good job somewhere and kindly submit a check at the end of the week...

You are starting from a false assumption that criminals are employed and earning a paycheck. For many this is not the case. I agree that prisons are not the answer, but compensation isn't either.
