Wood has some very effective anti-bacterial qualities built in that will kill bacteria fairly quickly and it is actually a preferable material for cutting boards to plastic because while plastic will not absorb moisture, the small scuffs and scratches will harbor bacteria and even let it multiply if not sterilized.
Here is an excellent report by a researcher on the subject:

Keep using those wood utensils without fear. They are perfect for food prep.

I would agree with "sptfyr", I too let them soak in some bleach but I also put them in the dish washer. Once they're dry you can sand them down and remove the old upper layer (which you can't do with plastic) and the advantage over metal is it won't heat up and burn you, and the advantage over plastic is (as you know plastic is a polymer and bits of the polymer always go into solution even if it's considered negligible) SO if I have to decide whether I prefer to swallow some molecules of wood or some of plastic , I think I'll go with the wood. And don't worry so much about bacteria !!

Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the last couple years, I'm sure you've heard of the Paleo Diet. Read here https://tr.im/paleodietplan
I hate to even call it a diet, because it's really just the real way that humans have eaten for almost 1.9 Million years, as opposed to the modern-day processed food diet full of grains, sugars, and processed vegetable oils.

Super hot water and even some Clorox added to the dish water should kill any lurking bacteria. If you are overly concerned then let them soak in mild bleach water and they should be just fine. As long as you don't marinate them in raw meat products or even sit in food products your wooden spoon should not be a health threat. My mother and I have used them for year without harming anyone.
Good Luck

actually when they tested wooden cutting boards and plastic ones they found that the plastic ones held bacteria longer and that because the wood dries more thoroughly the bacteria was more likely to die off so I would guess it would be the same with spoons
