It can be working fine one minute, speed okay and you don't have to be on the internet and it will freeze for no reason - it gets very annoying when you have to start it up all over again, and especially if you are in the middle of typing up a document!!!

everything is up to date - ie: service update, virus scans etc., it does not unfreeze itself. and, have done a defragmentation thing and that revealed nothing untoward!!

Hi Nickynoodles, love the name by the way LOL. it sounds as if your operating system has something missing rather than having an infection of some sort, however, have you run all of the normal scans for malware, viruses, trojans etc? if all of this has come up clean then it is probably worth thinking about a repair installation rather than a complete reinstall, this is of course assuming that you have the original installation software. Have you run regular Microsoft updates? especially service pack 2 if you have XP. if none of this helps then either mail me or repost here, i am sure the solution can be found. take care and good luck.

Needs a bit more info to be specific. Does it "unfreeze" if you leave it? If so it could be another process using up the RAM and your computer is having to write to and from the page file. As other posters have mentioned, it is a good idea to check for malware and clean out all "junk" files. Rather than relying on Windows to do it for you, if you go to sites such as "Major Geeks", there are plenty of freebies on there which should solve your problem, even if you only get the trial version. I can heartily recommend System Mechanic 7 if you have some money to spare. One thing does occur to me though. Are you by any chance using Word or some other program with an "Auto Save" feature on?

Have a look at Event Viewer to see if it is recording any errors. Double click Administrative Tools in Control Panel and select Event Viewer.

You may have something called Application Hang whereby a program stops responding. If you can lauch Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete then your PC has not crashed.

Have a look at the Processes and see whether the digits next to the frozen program are moving if not then click on the entry and click the End Process button.

Sounds like you might have some software running in the back slowing things down.

This could be virus stuff or old stuff you don't use any more!

Maybe it's time for a complete re-install?

Back up all data you need/want, then format and re-install!

hmmm, it could be a range of things, i suggest defragmenting the hardriver (can be found in system tools). Doing a disk cleanup (also found in system tools).

Then do a virus scan. Also if you know your computer stuff, hit ctrl-alt-del and check for any unusual processes, if you think something may be malicious then delete it.

I had EXACTLY the same problem as the one you are describing, and it drove me crazy. In my case, it turned out to be the new graphics driver I'd just installed. It took me days to work out the matter was! Back with the old driver now, and no more crashes!
