OK I know very little about cars, but I spent time with some friends who fixed our cars often and taught me, so i understand some things.
If the muffler were cracked, would I get the noise from the back, from the whole car?
Wouldn't the noise be loudest near the problem in the system?

Year, make and model? Some cars had problems with the seal going bad between the exhaust manifold and header pipe or header/front pipe to the cat converter. Could also be an air injection system problem if your car has that. Pinpoint the noise to see what's wrong.

well if it is exhaust, you could have an exhaust leak somewhere after the manifold or headers. but you better make sure its the exhaust system and not the engine.

Sounds like the front pipe/pipes are broken.
