Nothing. But as others have mentioned, sadly it was black people selling other weaker black people for profit. And what's little known or talked about is that there was white slavery during this period too--Barbary pirates raided many coastal villages in Britain/Ireland and took white residents away to be sold as slaves.

They sold captured members of other black tribes to the Arabs, the Portuguese and other groups? Slavery would never have became what it did without the help of African tribes. The truth is more complicated than you seem to think.
In short, they didn't do anything to deserve it, but they sure helped it along.

They were weaker, so whites took advantage. Stronger blacks in Africa captured other tribes and sold them. No one was innocent.
