The Catholic Church is against embryonic stem cell research because it involves creating life which is then afterwards destroyed.
It isn't against stem cell research per se - adults also have stem cells (in the bone marrow, cord blood and placenta) but these aren't considered as "valuable" by scientists because embryonic stem cells have the ability to develop into ANY cell in the body, whereas adult ones can only be made to develop into SOME of the hundreds of different cell types.

Following is one of the questions and answers that be found at the Catholic Update titled, "Stem Cell Research and Human Cloning: Questions and Answers" located at http://www.americancatholic.org/Newsletters/CU/ac0107.asp

Is the Catholic Church opposed to all stem cell research?

Not at all. Most stem cell research uses cells obtained from adult tissue, umbilical cord blood, and other sources that pose no moral problem. Useful stem cells have been found in bone marrow, blood, muscle, fat, nerves, and even in the pulp of baby teeth. Some of these cells are already being used to treat people with a wide variety of diseases.

Catholics believe that from the moment of conception until natural death, each human being is endowed by God with dignity and rights.

As long as this human dignity and these human rights are protected, the Church has no problem with stem cell research.

The Church supports stem cell research as long as the stem cells were not taken from an aborted human being.
