My favorite and one that's very old (1939) is Tryst, by Elswyth Thane. It's set during WWI (I think - close to it) and is about a young woman and her father moving into a house so he can do some research. One of the sons of the previous owner died on a mission for Britain during the war, and he returns to his room, which is the same as when he left. It's supposed to be kept locked. The young woman finds her way in and becomes aware of the man and they develop a relationship.

It is somewhat dated; the ages of the two main characters really illustrate this because he's around 38, so 20 years her senior (she's 17). Still, the story "haunts" you and is a difficult title to find because Tryst readers don't like to give up their copy.

The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexander Dumas. It's life, in a book, in my opinion. I'm also a big fan of Charles Dickens' David Copperfield; an excellent book. The books are long, but well worth the time.

You don't have to pay for old books...Most of them are public domain..Here are the mentioned books, from an excellent site. . .

Hmmm...my favorite romance is called "Devil in Winter" by Lisa Kleypas. It's got everything, drama, a relatable heroine, a fantastically funny and delicious hero, science, disease, Irish dudes and gambling!
