Most states require a degree in what they call an academic subject such as history or English or something like that. They also require courses in education and a semester, and sometimes a year, in supervised student teaching. Some states require master's degree in addition to your bachelor's degree.
You could look at a local college or university's catalog and probably find the requirement for your state there.

Before you are accepted into a teaching program, you usually have to be able to show that you have had some experience in dealing with kids - camp leader, scouts/guides, lifeguarding, etc.etc.
Once you are admitted to university, there is a four-year degree program plus a fifth year of teacher training, that will give you your basic credentials. After that, most teachers go to summer school to update their specialities or to expand their knowledge.

you could have NO TEACHING EXPERIENCE and be a substitute for a private school as long as you have a 4yr degree and later move up to a full time after gaining substitute teacher experience.
some places also require college education credits, not necessarly a education degree..
