The typical traditional college student (undergraduate) is 18 - 21 years old with more at the younger end than the older.

The range of "usual" is 17-25 (some start early and some start later); some stay longer than 4-years.

The range of "normal" is anything over 16 -- with a very occasional and rare under-16 and no upper limit.

If I were targeting a paper for "college student", I'd use the 18-21 range as my expectation - that's what most are in most colleges but there are some younger and some older.

the average college student at a traditional college should be 18-21 but with students taking a year off and more older students going back to school that number is going up in addition to the many online universities now out that have many older students returning to school. I am 30 and just went back to school at the university of phoenix online. Many of my classmates are much older than me. The online college student is probably 28-45 years old.

How old are you? How old are your classmates? When someone graduates they go to college. How old will you be when YOU graduate? What about your classmates?

Take that number and expect most college students will take 4-6 years to be in college. The national average for this would be a good thing to look up and research.

Think of your youngest friend in the same grade as you, and then the oldest friend in the same grade as you, and add 5 years to each of them. That should give you a good age range for university students.

to the best of my knowledge uni students' ages vary dramatically. & are you asking only of first time uni students, or each time ie i know someone who has done 2 degrees, 1st then worked for a few years, wanted to change careers & has now done a 2nd degree.
does your Q include starting age finishing age, some do f/t, p/t, defer for a while, only do part then leave or change mind, or change mind & degree?
me i started when i was 30yr, doing p/t, have deferred for couple yrs for various reasons, now am 35yr will be back at it next yr.
