At the end of every day, my kids and I put about 1/2 cup baking soda into each shoe and let it sit overnight. When we go to put them on in the morning we just dump the stuff into the trash and go on about our day. The excess will help keep your feet dryer during the day.

I'm not sure how the first poster affords cups and cups of baking soda 'each night'.

However, allowing shoes to completely dry between wearings, wearing fresh socks each day, and bathing/showering regularly are all good methods.

1) Dry shoes -- rotate your shoes, wearing the same pair each day keeps them from completely drying. While you hate to buy two pairs of expensive athletic shoes for growing children, wearing the same stinky pair all day, every day, is no more appealing. Synthetic shoes ('man made uppers') trap the most moisture and take the longest to dry. Leather and canvas dry the fastest, and most completely.

2) Socks - fresh (clean) pair each day, and change them after exercising. Socks at all are a good idea -- wearing any kind of shoes over bare feet deposits a lot of bacteria which grows into odor.

3) Hygiene. Clean feet don't stink. Clean feet, in clean socks, in shoes that had a chance to dry completely -- have (virtually) no odor.

Clean feet are the key. Changing socks frequently also helps. Switching pairs often and take them off when you come into the house and put on slippers for walking around the house is an excellent practice (ask any Chinese family). Adding chemicals to shoes is a poor practice that will eventually have adverse health effects (not my feet!),
