I was watching a documentary this weekend on William Masters and one of the techniques he used with his patients to clear their minds prior to starting an experiment was to have them count backwards from a large number (like 6,258) by an uncommon number (like 7). He called it "cleansing" the mind.

A bubble bath.
Oh okay you might not go for that.

I also find sitting on a hill overlooking a lovely view very serene.

Heck, Eric, there is no such method.
Our mind is not built to clear itself of all thoughts, even in a coma the mind has degrees of activity.
In a bubble bath, your mind drifts to pleasant things, gazing at perfect views one is struck by the beauty of the world.
I believe the same happens with meditation.

Eric, I know I'm rambling but I don't think we are meant to clear our minds of all thoughts and neither do I think I would want to.

Eric, try fishing. That's what I do to clear my mind of all thoughts. It really is effective.

I am from New York City and twice a year I take a trip to Key West to fish. As a matter of fact I was out there last month and I'm taking another trip to the Florida Keys in December. :)

Clearing your mind of al thoughts is dangerous business. There are some that believe that this allows evil to get a foothold. Perhaps you could attempt to clear your mind of negative thoughts by concentrating on positive thoughts. Yes, I said it, just think happy thoughts. LOL. When you get a thought or a series of thoughts that bother you, you need to make an effort to replace it with good ones.

I often use prayer and ask God to take bad thoughts from me, and to show me something good in my life. We often focus on bad things, when there are so many good things in our lives.

lie down, relaxing music, aromatherapy (incense, fragrant oil) such as lavendar, chamomile, or whatever is pleasing to you. Preferably put in headphones with the music to get the full affect. No tv, no phones. Pull the shades down, and just focus on the music and let it take you away. At least you'll clear your head for the few moments that you are doing this... :) Good luck!

Only a good nap or a night's sleep does it for me on a daily basis. In more serious cases a vacation can do it if it is a relaxing vacation.

My Buddhist meditation clears my mind, without a deliberate attempt to do so... I sit in my payer room (or any quiet place), with my eyes open and chant, "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo"
