It is a 92 Grand Am and I have had some problems in cooler weather (it isn't even cold yet!) starting my car. I might have to turn the key back wait an try again maybe 6-7 times to get it to start sometimes. (other times even when it is cold outside , it fires right up)

Today, I got in the car and I had to drive it cold. I had to pick up my daughter from school. Well, it just shut off when I was driving in a straight line! I mean, I wasn't even turning a corner and there was no sputtering or anything! It was just there and then gone! It did this 3 times on the way to the school and once I got to the school, it didn't give me any more trouble on the way back. What's wrong with my car? (besides being old) Is there a way to fix this? (besides stuffing a rag in the gas tank and lighting it?)

Yeah, the overdrive has been disconnected... last year. Mine was doing the same thing but it was after having driven long distances. This is when it is cooler outside and I haven't driven it very far yet.

Thanks Bax, I plan to have it looked at on Friday. Sadly, I have to keep trying to get it to run until then. I only have that for transportation. :-( Lucky for me though, I have AAA towing! Best investment I have ever made! 2nd best investment I am going to make.... a 2x4. :-)

Could be the fuel pump is starting to fail. If it stops running and you get stranded, hit the bottom of the gas tank with a 2x4 or shoe or something to give it a good thump with out putting a hole in it. It helps to have someone crank the engine over while hitting the tank. Once started don't turn the car off until at the mechanics shop. I'd go right to a mechanic and have them figure out whats wrong before you do get stranded with your kid in the car! BAX

Your torque converter clutch solenoid may be bad. You can unplug it and see if it stops the stalling. This doesn't explain the hard starting. If you have a 2.3 engine, you can pull the cover off the engine and see if the DIS module inside has black scorch marks on it, as your spark may be jumping through the coil pack and grounding against the engine. If it is a 3.1, you may have carbon built up and need a combustion chamber cleaning.
