Before you attempt to restore Windows, have you tried booting it in Safe Mode? Turn on the computer, and then begin to repeatedly press the F8 key until you get a screen that offers you the Safe Mode option. Often booting into Safe Mode is enough to fix the probelm with the PC.

If a Safe Mode boot does not fix things, but you do get in to Windows, you can just a "check disk" to hopefully recover any damaged files, or create a new user id if needed.

Try that BEFORE you do the Windows restore....

Try this. Reboot your PC and tap the F8 key. Choose "Last Known Working Configuration". That should sort out your problem. If that does not work do a system restore. Repeat the first step and choose "safe mode". Once in safe mode click Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore. Restore your PC to a date you know it was working OK. Preferably use a 'system scheduled restore point'.
Good luck
