I think it depends on the circumstances of the break up. When I split up with my ex I wanted the split he didn't and he thought we would get back together so we eventually had to cut of all contact. (No kids involved) Now though if we bump into each other we can make polite conversation. Deep down I still have a special place for him.

You can be polite especially if there are kids involved. Being friends is a waste of time. I need to respect my friends.

For me the answer is no, one daughter who's 22, she can't stand her father and vs how sad.
Was married for 31 years, we are enemys now.
I filed for a divorce, got tired of his cheating.......
