With infants being born almost every year, it makes me wonder where the umbilical cords will end up? Maybe in the trash can, but where do they go from there? This from a parent of four children (three daughters and one son).

The remainder of the umbilical cord, after it is cut, is still attached to the placenta, and it and the placenta are disposed of as medical waste (incinerated). There are a number of things done with the cord blood (testing, etc), and most hospitals offer the option to parents of preserving some cord tissue in a "cord bank" for treatment of diseases later in their child's life.

It all depends on the hospital. Some literally just throw them away while others use them for research. Like the baby back cells. I cant remember the technical term. But there are many different researches that can be done just through the umbilical cord.

most hopsitals incinerate them...but some use them for stem cell research, and a lot of parents now are banking the cord blood for future medical needs

If you has the blood saved (storage) of course it will go there. The hospital told me they keep the cord for 2 weeks I beleive..then toss it out.

They burn them in a furnace as they do with most human body parts etc it wouldn't be very sanitary just to put them in a trash can.
