Absolutely nothing, I do that very thing often. My reward is a pleasant odor and a thankful smile from the recipient of my compliment. Others are just too uptight.

It depends on your approach. If you soar in and stick your nose right next to the person, like the way dogs do, then you're invading someone's space and you would probably provoke further action, perhaps either violent or something that involves security. However, if you are smooth about it, casually standing next to, not in front or back of the person, taking in a light whiff, and gently complimenting them on their choice of perfue or deodorant , that approach is usually more acceptable. Bottom line is, people wear fragrance to smell nice to other people. It goes back as far as cavemen. As long as you appreciate the fragrance in a NON-THREATENING way, you are providing positive feedback, afirmation and compliment. Doing so casually usually leads to further conversation, and the possibility of the beginning of a new friendship or courtship.

For you dawgs out there, don't go sticking your nose into other people's business, literally and figuratively.

I agree with the fact that this is invasive and is considered violating ones personal space.

It's perfectly fine to compliment someone on their fragrance but before you get close enough to take in a good deep whiff you should ask permission in a manner that lets them know you simply appreciate what you smell and would like a more full experience of it. That prevents you from rudely doing something that people aren't comfortable with.

It's much too personal of an endeavor to visit upon a complete stranger. Poor etiquette.

Due to a preconceived notion of our society.

According to general consensus, if you comment on something that is personal to that individual, you are the one that is breaching polite manners. However, what is personal varies from person to person.

One person, it might be smell, another it might be the underwear sticking out of their pants, and in another it might be the color of their eyes.

Anyway, I would say thanks, smile, and walk away. Why? Cuz I like the smell of my perfume too - that's why I bought it! LOL

Because you will get knocked the f@#! out! Seriously tho, there's nothing wrong per say with that, but people are so paranoid today - with good reason. There are a lot of psychos out there. What's to stop someone from licking me to see how I taste. ( Like sweet chocolate btw)

I don't think it's wrong at all. Most people would find it flattering to know that their cologne is working & people find the fragrance nice instead of sickening.
