If I use a brand-new photo cartridge and then take it out of my Lexmark P4330 Printer for a few weeks it doesn't work properly again, although I keep it in the cartridge storage unit provided. It is costing me a fortune. Can anyone help?

On the printer in question, to print photos you have to take out the black cartridge and replace it with the photo cartridge, and vice versa. That's why I take it out.

Just for a laugh, try printing photos with your black and color cartridge, instead of switching out the black and photo. Remember to change the paper settings if you are printing on matte or glossy paper. You might be surprised at how well they print with just the four colors, and how overrated the photo cartridge can be.
You can also try installing the photo cartridge, and performing a cleaning cycle before you start trying to print photos.
If that doesn't solve it, moisten a tissue with some Windex and gently wipe the printhead area/bottom/business end of the cartridge. It might help unplug the nozzles.
The only other suggestion is to use it a bit more regularly.

Try rubbing the print heads with a damp piece of kitchen roll. Do make sure that you don't rub one colour into another though, you don't want to muck up your prints.
If that doesn't work, rest the print heads of your ink cartridge on a damp piece of kitchen towel for a few minutes. You'll then need to wipe the print heads with a dry piece of kitchen towel in such a way that you don't mix the colours.

Never seen this setup, but, try supporting the cart on maybe a couple old biro's, placed in airtight box, with water in the bottom. This will create a humid atmosphere to prevent drying. May even work for your 'older ' carts.

when you first use a new cartridge you have to take off the protective tape on the terminals dont you so when your finnished why not put some low contact tape back over this will keep em fresh

Well if the seal has been removed then alot of the water in the ink will evaporate. Then there's also the issue of dust settling on the chip, try wiping it with a clean cloth, see if that makes any difference?

why are you taking them out? makes no sense to me, especially when they are drying out anyway. how is this saving you any money?
