I have a question with terminology relating to sports predictions. Let's say the Miami Dolphins are playing at the Houston Texans and experts pick "Houston minus the 7." Does this mean that the line was for Houston to win by 7? Does this indicate that the experts predict Houston to win, but not by 7? What if Houston was picked to win "plus the 7?" Who decides what "the line" should be? Vegas? Thanks for the help!

i am from houston so i feel i am better able to answer your question. houston -7 means houston should win my 7. if you take that bet houston has to win by 8 in order for your bet to win. if they win by 7 it is a push and you get your money back. less than 7 and you lose.

if it is +7 then the experts in vegas think houston will lose by 7. again that goes to if they lose by 7 it is a push. if they lose by more than 7 it is a loss and if they lose by less than 6 or even win then you win your bet.

there are people in vegas whose job is to make the lines. most lines on websites dont go up to be able to bet on till the middle of the week. i personally think several guys make the lines and then they call around and agree on a common number. the lne is the same everywhere this has to be happeneing. every website has the same number give or take 1/2 of a point. they do the half of a point so there isnt a push and they usually offer purchasing 1/2 of a point to be able to push.

The Losing team lost or failed to cover the spread. There isnt a single- word term in sports betting terminology.
