In my family (8 members) we have had 6 Dells over the last 10 years. We have only now retired the first Optiplex (after many upgrades over the years)
I am currently typing this on a 2003 Dimension 2350. I am not going to get something newer, because I don't need to!

In this day and age it really does not matter if you stick to the name brands and pick one that is right for you. They make millions of them so there are bound to be a few w. problems. You could have one person who has had two of "x" brand and says both were terrible and customer service was as well. But the next guy might have had 5 of the same brand and all was well.
The answer that says that you get what you pay for w. a Dell is false..... you are just paying their overhead. A few years ago the market got saturated so the order from the company way of selling went flat. Other companies moved into retail (Best Buy and such) like Gateway. Dell missed the boat so they charge more for the same thing.
It is best to go to a place like Best Buy. You can pick it up, try it and hold it. You can pick what is right for you as this is the big thing..... not which brand is best.

We have 7 Dell's in our family.
3 desktops: 2 Dimensions, 1 XPS-410
4 laptops: 4 Inspirons
1 is 7 years old and all the others are under 2 years old.
Not 1 problem to date with any of them.
Do I recommend them? Yep!!! Best bang for the buck in my opinion. I have the XPS-410 and love it.
If you are shopping - check out the Dell PC's. Create an account on their web site and they will send you email about all the various sales they have. Some are 1 day only so the email notifications are great if you're shopping.
Hope this helps.

You can sometimes and sometimes not. I have 3 at work in my office, and 3 work and 1 doesn't work so good. If you are talking laptops, I would go with Toshiba, Sony, HP, Compaq. People say Compaq is not good but it is made my HP. It is the same exact thing except a different name. But anyways, back to Dell. There desktops are the best though. I have used them over the years and only have had a problem with one. They are pretty nice. They are out in the range that may run a little more money, but it can be worth it. But so they sometimes can be good and sometimes not.

I think Dell is one of the best, if not the best, computer company. It is like in the top of league with brands like HP, IBM or Sony. Though they are quite a new company but they are already going places. However, their customer service sucks, but not always. They have outsouced their call center operations to some third world countries like India and their service is terrible. But as a brand, I don't think you should have any issues with the product and hence you won't be required to call them up.

We currently have 4 Dells in our house and no problems with any of them.
They may be a little more expensive than computers you can get a store like Best Buy or Office Depot, but you get what you pay for.
