Please remember the New Deal didn't solve the depression all it did was create a massive government.

I think it isn't a crime problem.
We should be teaching morals to our children.
Yet you have come up with an idea how we are going to fund this bad boy.
Those in prision already get to go to college and considering how many return that doesn't seem to fit either.

About the depression it was WWII that pulled this country out. My mother lived through it and is a historian. There are many others who study made the same claim.

As we become a more sophisticated society (at least technologically) we do need higher levels of education for our general population and I am notopposed to government getting out of the way so that it may happen in the most free, efficient manner possible, but please, not from liberal Dems. Haven't you people figured out that liberals should not be handling the pursestrings of the country? They are of the most value when dealing with gross human injustices that are sometimes caused by greed within the laissaz-faire capitalist structure.
Let's have more education ppossibilities with funding from tax credits, student loans, (offset by military or public service), and private means. But please liberal Dems, stay away from the funding. (for everybody's good). It's just not your area of expertise.

A certain amount of tax credits could be issued on a limited basis for the needy and scholarships and grants often pick up the tab for the rest. There are billions of dollars of unclaimed scholarships and grants out there every year. Student and parents, not the government, need to do the homework. The money is out there.
John Edwards still has no idea of how the regular people live. We don't want handouts. The American working class has fought to survive for centuries and succeeded or failed by its own merits. We want a hand up; an opportunity, something that inspires us to work hard, not something that enables us to be apathetic. He has never respected the working class. He consistently talks down and doesn't think we are smart enough to see the inconsistencies between what he preaches and what he practices.

It isnt the governments job to do this. Universities are the ones jacking uo tuition when they have billions in the banks not the government. I am fine with interest free loans but not with the government paying for the bill.
For the ignorant that post that the New Deal ended the depression, most economist agree that it didnt; it may have prolonged it. WWII ended the depression as we ramped up to built equipment for the allies before we entered the war.
We can and should be self sufficient. A safety net is one thing but a way of life that is dependent on the government is not acceptable.

How can we not afford too?
Our countries future depends on higher education. It is an investment in our countries future.
That is why I believe anyone who wants an education beyond high school should be able to get it.
When I was in my early 20's, tuition at the Jr Colleges in California was almost free. The biggest expense people had was books. Now even Jr College is out of reach for many.
I'm 56 now, and if California could afford almost tuition free Jr College, well damnit, then they can still afford it.
As I said, it is an investment in our countries future, and with globalization and the leveling of the playing field, we need to invest heavily in our country or we'll become a footnote in history.
Peace
Jim

Why would you not want to further our country? Having easier access to education is one way to create a smarter generation. What is wrong with that? There is money that can be used for better purposes (example: Corporate Welfare) than the way the current system is set up. Why would you not want to improve our country?
This statement is a show of why the right is referred to as selfish. You only want to improve you and yours, and the hell with everyone else. Let's just keep promoting poverty instead of educating those so they can help themselves!

Technically the government can. If our government can spend billions and trillions overseas then surely we could afford to establish public tuition free educational institutions. Here is America capitalism is so strong and those in power will do anything they can to squash voices of socialism. In other countries many institutions are either free for public or low cost.

Do you have any idea of how much this war is costing us? We owe the Chinese trillions because we borrowed to pay for the war. When Bush came into office, we had a surplus. Now we are deeply in debt. Use that money to benefit Americans, not to wage a war based on a lie.

The New Deal didn't "solve the depression?"
Hmmmm......lots of elderly people who lived through it will be very interested to learn that.
As for Education, it's common sense that America will be well-served by an educated citizenry.
Who's to pay for it?
Dry up Corporate Welfare as of this second, and BOOM, problem solved.
You need to re-examine your priorities!
****************************
It is absolutely mind-boggling that you are going to sit right there and say it's hunky-dorey to give hundreds of millions of dollars to SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES POSTING RECORD PROFITS but you will not finance higher education for hard-working Americans.
I spit upon you.

If we can afford TRILLIONS of dollars for runaway war spending - just because the Bush family had a personal vendetta against Hussein and Cheney coveted all that OIL, and the giant U.S. military-industrial complex had to boost its sagging profits - we can afford a few hundred billion to send impoverished, underprivileged, poor kids to college. Let those families who can afford it on their own pay for it on their own. Let those families who can't afford it on their own enjoy the privileges an American college education can provide. -RKO- 10/29/07

College needs to be accessible to all people. Everyone should benefit and everyone should pay. We will save money from having less people in jail. We will save money by being able to spend less on law enforcement.
