Alot of people think they are better at swimming than they actually are. Many people who drown on the ocean get caught in a rip tide current and are swept out and use up all their enegy fighting it. Remember to float and swim steadily accross a rip current. Many people also mix up drinking & go swimming= bad news. You tire out faster and make poor decisions and your capacity is diminished.
I worked at a National Park and a man I knew at the research part of the fishery center stated that people have the right to be stupid. I thought that was calous & indifferent & all I wanted was Spanish language signs to go with the English ones. He didn't want lots of signs & got pissed.
One of my high school friends died the summer after high school at a resevoir & we never knew that he could not swim. I think it should be a required course in high school or college.

Thank you You are smart for bringing this up. I have been a victim before to this. I only did not know that the water could be that deep. I learned from this experience. I almost drowned. Now I know not to ever go past the deep point. I know I will drown.

Sometimes they don't have a choice (like the Katrina Hurricane) about if they get into water or not.
I just wish everyone would learn how to swim or get some life jackets ready just in case.

Their's been plenty of people that have drowned who were excellent swimmers. A lot of things can happen in the water.
Undertows, you can get a cramp lose your breath and blackout,
plenty of people have actually drowned trying to save other people from drowning. The list of possibilities are endless.

I wonder how many of them CAN swim, but get into a situation where they can't swim well enough?
And how many of the drownings are caused by alcohol?

The answer is very simple. Lack of water safety knowledge. Alot of people do not have adequate knowledge of water safety. Even swimmers drown because they are unaware of the dangers or they overestimate their abilities.

Yaa last night my mom said someone we used to know drowned.. I was like wtf how? She said crabbing at night. He was epileptic or something like that. Had a sezzier and drowned. So somtimes it is be mistake.. They can swim but maybe are drunk, maybe hit there head on way to water. So many possibilities...

There are lots of Lobstermen who can't swim. If a rope knocks them overboard, unless they have a buddy to drag 'em out again, they drown.
Why do they do it? They know how to do it, its what they are trained for and they have no desire to starve.
