To start with you shoul have a good processor. Intel Core2Duo processors are good. You can also enquire with ur dealer about the newly launched Quad Core processors from Intel.

A 160 Gb hard disk is normal. A 320 Gb might be useful if your storage requirements are high.

A 15 inch screen is ideal for most applications. Don't go for laptops with lesser screen sizes as it will become difficult for you to see webpages and lengthy documents in a small screen.

Dont go for Vista Home Basic. It has less feautures and also it doesn't have the Aero effect (the glossy windows in Vista is due to aero effect only). Go for Vista Home Premium or Ultimate. Else you can very much go for the tried and tested Win XP Pro.

If you go for Vista, make sure you have atleast 2 Gb ram. For XP, 1 Gb will do good.

Go for a laptop with 1.3 mp or 2 mp camera. They shud come handy shud u need to take a photograph or even for video chatting / conferencing.

A laptop with a 8 hr battery backup is ideal. More is better.

If you want security go for laptops with fingerprint scanning. Also some come with privacy filters. A privacy filter is a filter which is placed over the monitor which will enable only people directly in front of the laptop to see the screen contents. Others, like the one siiting next to your seat will just see a black screen.

And there are laptops which you can dock like a desktop for ease of use. I suggest HP laptops.

Hope I answered you. Happy computing :)

Depends on your need, but below configuration is a basic - I think, below this is a waste of money, and just "I own a Laptop" show off.

Windows Vista Ultimate (if your are into programming or networking, I mean power user) else Vista Basic, 2GB DDR2 Ram, Intel Core 2 duo processor, 320Gb hard disk, dual layer dvd( Writer), Blue Tooth, Wi Fi, Infra Red. Min 8 hrs. Battery back up life

Additional : - A USB Optical mouse, A Full Fleged USB Keyborad (in case you decide to play game or do full fledged Data Entry Job), Web Cam (1.3 mp), 4 GB Pendrive...that's it

Size of screen should be determined by your physical built and how much load you can carry, I would advice you to opt for small screen, because you want a laptop - right?

NOTE : You can never find the comfort of a desktop in a laptop... Trust me in this case. It is a pain to work for 5 hours at stretch in a laptop.

There is no one best configuration. There's only what's best for the situation where the laptop will be used. A laptop set up for programming won't work well in a network support situation. A laptop used to perform ad hoc queries won't do well if it's set up for word processing.

The intended use determines how the machine gets set up.

Win XP Pro, 1GB Ram, CD/DVD burner, NIS2007, wireless and ethernet cards, office 2003. All the other crap they package with new laptops is useless. Get an ISP that doesn't require software like AOL does. Clearwire is good. Or RoadRunner without AOL.
