I have heard of it. It is only disturbing in the same sense as cloning a dead child....engineering genetics for strange purposes can only lead to something bad. However, if it is used to stamp out disease, great.

Some people use 'eugenics' when using in vitro egg implantation. It allows the female egg to be tested for deformed eggs i.e. known chromosomal attributes by the man or woman before implantation. Bad fertilized eggs are discarded and only the good eggs are implanted. This allows for babies to be born without deformation or other known common disorders. It's an expensive procedure but met with great satisfation that you won't be passing on a family disorder to another generation.

It's taking the idea of 'selective breeding' which happens already in livestock and animal breeding (e.g. pure-bred dogs, horses), and applying it to humans in a more technoligical and sophisticated way.
I don't really like the idea because it begins to say that some lives are better than others (Watch the film Gattaca for an interesting take on this), however, I could see the potential benefits in some limited medical situations, but don't think it should become a matter of course.

Yes. I think it's interesting but a bit disturbing at the same time.
