This is a solvable problem but it has to be done right. The other poster is right that many times the aid goes to the dictators who don't use it to help their people. What needs to be done is to build humanitarian bases in africa, similar to military bases, run with the same logistics and efficiency, with humanitarian missions, food drops, etc. Aid given directly to the people who need it, not to 3rd parties who can't be trusted.

I'm old enough to remember USA FOR AFRICA. That was back in 1985!
It is the same old story as it was back then.
Over the years, we realize that the aid didn't do much help.
When you send aid to Africa, you end up giving it to the dicatators and warlords. You are indirectly financing the terrorism over there.
The warlords use your funds to pay the thugs that intercept the food. Most of that food that gets sent will end up rotting in the crate it was brought over in.
Quote from one of the below links: "Huge bureaucracies are financed (with the aid money), corruption and complacency are promoted, Africans are taught to be beggars and not to be independent. In addition, development aid weakens the local markets everywhere and dampens the spirit of entrepreneurship that we so desperately need. As absurd as it may sound: Development aid is one of the reasons for Africa's problems. If the West were to cancel these payments, normal Africans wouldn't even notice."

It is pointless. That will not stop the killing. You have to stop the wars in Africa before anything else otherwise all the aid you give is wasted.
Only a powerful armed United Nations peace keeping force could achieve anything and that will not happen because the security council will not agree to send in troops.
There is nothing I can do personally, even though it upsets me a great deal.

I think we (American's) are being tapped out in being asked to support just about everyone. There are, and always will be people all over the world who are desperate for help due to civil wars. Then there's disease, hurricanes (at home, too!), earthquakes, tsumani's and all types of natural disasters. The USA has always been key in aiding people. I think as individuals, people just can't handle the continious stream of misery, since we have our own issues, too.

Lots of people are listening and trying to bring attention to it. I think your hopeless feeling stems from you believing we are omnipotent - we're not.
Also, there are lots of people making money from leaving Africa a mess and getting the cheap labor there.
So keep after it but don't expect change over night!
