There are mysterious things about quantum mechanics, but that's not really one of them. Particle propagate as probability waves, and waves are distributed (the same wave can be in more than one place at a time).

What do you think "time" has to do with it?

People don't understand it (most don't even know what you're talking about) because it isn't a particle that passes through two slits at the same time. It is a wave that can do that.

It is because an electron exists as both a wave and a particle until we measure it.

That's why it doesn't work if you place a sensor in front of the two slits. By measuring it, we nail it down and force it to behave like a particle, and only pass through one slit.
