I'm specifically thining of the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry but others get nasty, too -right down to long-time buddies who will fight because they are on different bowling teams.
Rivalries are fun, I can't deny that. It is fun to poke fun at the fan of another team especially if they are losing. But these days people will beat up strangers for rooting for the 'other' team and even kill them. But as a Sox fan I wouldn't use the word hate to decribe my feelings for the Yankees.
Where is the fun? What hapened to class? Why is it so intense?

Because class and fun have been replaced by money. It's no longer the game that it was back in the 50's and 60's. It's all about the almighty dollar now. The rivalry is sensational, and as a Red Sox Fan, I too wouldn't use the word hate to describe the Yankees, but it is sensational, it draws crowds, and it brings in money. Bottom line - it all comes down to money.

Here on Y/A it's a bunch of pissy immature kids whose parents neglected to teach sportsmanship. The Yankees/Red Sox rivalry is decades old, but the meanness isn't. It's cool these days to be insulting and disparaging and mean. People here have even bashed little kids for asking questions. One kid said that he was 14 and had just picked Derek Jeter as his favorite player and asked if that was a good choice. A Red Sox fan called him -- remember, he's 14 and just getting into baseball -- a queer. When I made an entry condemning that, I was told it was all just in fun so shut up. The rivalry isn't intense, it's damned immaturely handled.

The soccer rivalries in Europe and Latin America often lead to violence and death. English fans, especially of Liverpool are notorious for riots in the stadium. Same goes with Real Madrid vs. Barcelona and Lazio vs. Livorno in the Italian League. Sox and Yankess rivalry is very civilized compared to those.

River and Boca Juniors is a good rivalry. I lived in Argentina for awhile and when you meet people it's one of the first things they ask about. It's insane.

Not all rivalries are nasty. The best rivalry in all of sports is the Cardinals and Cubs and they are so friendly that best friends and even family members can be split down the middle and be in harmony!

You can have a rivalry and have class, fun and still be intense.

Red Sox and Yankees go overboard.

because instead of looking at it as an out of everyday life a place to relax.they bring the same passion/anger they have in their in own life and put all their hopes in sport that that will go good when it doesn't all the anger comes back.

Because the fans lack intelligence... with so many thousands of stupid people, there's bound to be conflict.

It's all about bragging rights. If you win, then you can brag about it until your next game with your rivals. If you lose, you suffer the humiliation and you wait 'til you can get back at your rival.
