With all due respect to you; and no real offense to the Gas company/service provider; They should be the first place you go for a resolution. They would usually be the place to call for ANY service to the unit.

Have someone check the thermostat. If it is not working the tank will never heat up.

MOST gas companies do NOT repair customer owned appliances. IF you smell gas then please call your gas provider, IF you have gas to other appliances in your home and they are working properly then you do NOT need to call the gas company. Have they checked your thermo-coupler? I would almost bet it is that.

Buy a new one; they are much more efficient now, and the savings will be well worth it!
