What does the symbol << mean in maths? its not the 'smaller than or equal to' symbol.?

in the book the << was much closer together and it was used 'where e^y << 1 '. Help!

It mean much less than. So 0.001 is << 1000, for example.

mean less than but also depends on the way it is facing cause it can mean the more than also

but in that case it wold be less than
