The symptoms: when I plug into the Input, a low level of sound comes out when I play, but turning the volume knob makes no difference to the volume. There is a little backgound noise. I know its the amp (rather than the speaker) that is damaged.

Its a sealed unit, combo Trace Elliot, 200w Commando amp, so it will have to go to a specialist to get fixed - I've already tried opening it up and can't.

Any diagnoses, or tips on amp repairers in LONDON, do let me know.

Many thanks.

Are you sure that its not just your cord?? I had a problem kinda like that on my guitar amp and it turned out to be the cord. Might try that first.

I would try a new lead AND another bass guitar first, just in case it is your instrument or lead that is faulty.
You may have already done this but it doesn't hurt to ask the obvious.
I strongly advise you not to open it up and go poking around inside . That is a good way to get electrocuted. Believe me ; been there, done that.
