You can test for presence of Pb2+ cations by adding aqueous Sodium Hydroxide(NaOH) into your unknown mixture of magnesium nitrate and lead nitrate. The lead compound will form a soluble white precipitate, which in turn dissolves in excess NaOH to form a colourless solution. This can be a little tricky.
