HI everyone, as Ive said Im 38 weeks + 4days and for the past few days Ive been having a period like cramping feeling, its not really painful just feels achey. Anyway, today Ive been having a few pains in my back (not too many) but at 5am I got up and came downstairs for a drink, all of a sudden I got this really sore pain from the top of my belly that moved right down it before going away. My belly also went rock hard. As its my first, I haven't a clue whats going on lol (niave i know) I genuinely thought maybe things were starting but I haven't experienced it since. Still feeling crampy and baby's moving fine. Anyone have any ideas as to whats going on, don't wanna ring midwife with stupid questions! Thanks and sorry for rambling on x

Your body is getting ready for birth, dont worry, you wont miss it and you just know when its the time, billions of women have had babies and all feel the same as you.

Good luck, ensure you hospital bag is near the front door and ready.

Edit- dont call your midwife now- you have no other signs of labour, no shows, no contractions, no sickness and so on..

It's never a stupid question when you just need information, esp. since its your first.

It sounds like very early labour. At 38 wks, you could go into labour at anytime and it's just fine. The period-type pains your experiencing are very typical for early labour. When your tummy went rock hard you must have experienced a contraction. Pains can be felt in the back, tummy and even the legs but it's different for everyone.

My advice to you is to relax and rest up as much as you can because you never know when things will kick off and you'll need all your energy. You can take paracetamol if you're in alot of pain (you'll be surprised at how much that can help), and have a warm soak in the bath. You will need to inform your midwife ONLY if you waters break, you start bleeding or if your contractions are about 5mins apart. The longer you can stay at home before going in the better.

I wish you all the best.

I'd say you're having braxton hicks sweetie! They usually come and go and sometimes quite suddenly and painfully. Painfully as in anything from aching period pain feeling to sharp stabbing feeling. That rock hard feeling is also a big indication of braxton hicks.
If the pains come more regularly and intesify then you could be in for a trip to the hospital to meet your baby!

Hang in there, you're almost primed and ready to go. Get your doc to do an internal at your next visit and see if you are thinning or dilating at all. I'd hazard a guess that you would be. Try sex to get things moving. Lay with a big fat pillow under your butt/hips after sex to allow the hormones in semen to soften your cervix. (the same hormone is in semen and the hormone the baby secrets to tell your body to start labour)

Best of luck!

Braxton Hicks contrations baby is letting you know not long now.
They are what we call practice contractions and common, not unusual and perfectly normal at this stage. You can have them just before or a couple of weeks before baby comes.
Relax although difficult to do when baby is due especially first one can arrive two weeks early or late.
Tell doctor or midwife you are having them as it is important they know but only when you see them as i am sure that is this week.
Good luck

Sounds to me like you are nearly ready! You should never feel bad about asking your midwife questions about what is going on, thats partly what they are there for and they would rather you ask if you are unsure about anything. I rememner having a few times when my belly went really hard, I don't think you have anything to worry about but seriiously if you are concerned then ask the midwife, she won't mind!

i would call your midwife.. Its not a stupid question.. that is what she is there for. It could be the start of labor or braxton hicks (practice contractions)
If they are coming in some sort of on and off and on and off.. I would start timing them, from the start of one to the start of the next. This will tell you how far apart they are.

Good luck....
How exciting that you are soo close... !!!!

it sounds like your body is gearing up for the big day. If you haven't felt it again the pain is probably just a braxton hicks. Keep in tune with your body and relaxed your time is coming soon! Congrats!!!

sounds to me like baxton hicks, practice contractions getting ready for the real thing, they are not normally painful but normally very uncomfortable, if you start getting these regularly then time them. good luck with it all not long to go now.
