In book 5 she was knocked out by Bellatrix. In book 7 she was killed by Bellatrix. Was there a casting couch involved?

Well being able to defend oneself isn't all of which you are scored on to become an auror. You have to remember that in book 5 on page 52 she did say that she got top marks in Concealment and Disguise but nearly failed on Stealth and Tracking. Plus you have to take into account who she was up against. You don't have to have a perfect score just like you don't need to have perfect grades to graduate from high school.

No, she is smarter than she first appears in OotP, and she had to have received top marks at Hogwarts and successfully completed Auror training. Keep in mind too, that Bellatrix is a bad guy who is about second in skill only to Voldemort. Also she has a Jones about killing the "Blood Traitors" in her family.
