Because his body wasn't found (although the Russians found a look-alike to photograph and put people's minds at rest), it was rumored that Hitler has contrived to escape the collapsing Berlin and somehow made it to South America, where he supposedly was starting a "Fourth Reich" with his cronies, Martin Bormann, Joseph Mengele, Adolf Eichmann, "and the rest," like they used to sing on "Gilligan's Island."
Mengele and Eichmann did get to South America. Mengele died there in 1979, but Eichmann was found by the Israeli Secret Service, MOSSAD, and kidnapped back to Israel for war crimes trial in 1960, where he was found guilty and executed in 1962.
Bormann was killed in Berlin in May 1945 but his bones were not discovered until 1972. DNA testing later showed the remains were those of Bormann.
Incidently, in the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie, the counterfeit Golden Ticket is found in South America, and the picture shown in the newspaper of the hoaxster is Bormann's.

Hitler and Eva Braun both died of gunshot wounds, witnessed by his officers in the bunkhouse. They were then carried to a pit outside the bunker and, doused with gasoline and torched, there's a small garage over the area now.
Geraldo Riviera some years ago, one of his spendy money things (other peoples) trying to prove parts of history as fact. Tried to prove the burial spot was now under a mechanics garage, the the time in East Berlin but, nothing ever came of it. Everyone know about it but, no one could quite remember the spot.

For many of the same reasons that people believe in Santa Claus & the Easter Bunny many people dread the thought that certain people are dead/ Amelia Earhart, Judge Carter, James Dean, Elvis Presley and Jimmy Hoffa all have supporters swearing they are alive and well/
Many people wanted to believe that Adolf Hitler was alive - - - those sorts who were certain Hitler concocted World War Two for personal gain and managed to retire to South America with plenty of loot. And many people viewed escape from Berlin as a 'cowardly' act and wanted to condemn Hitler for being a coward as if dying in a bunker with a bullet in the head was not cowardly/
Actually there are more rumors concerning how Hitler died. Many people insist Hitler ingested Cyanide, only, as if that was more cowardly then popping a bullet into his head. Actually a rumor popular among GI s that actually worked its way into Weird Comics was a rumor that Hitler had to beg one of his aids to shoot him because his own hands were trembling to much..
The 'Hitler' is Alive rumors spread slowly after the war more as a diversion from more important issues. Since the Soviets held back the information that they had Hitler's corpse they were often the instigators of rumors finding it an amusing game to stir up unease.

He shot himself. There were too many people in the bunker to dispute that fact. Now, what happened to his and Eva Brauns bodies is a whole new rumour field.

There was a rumor that he died of syphilis, but that's unlikely, especially since some historians also think he died a virgin. There is good evidence that he suffered from Parkinson's disease, but that was not the likely cause of death.
