Not quite true. Canada also competes. A team from Toronto won it twice (92 and 93).

The modern world series started in 1903 and at that time baseball was only played in the united states. Since that time many other countries now play the game but the name "world series" has remained to define the championship series played in MLB.

A lot of the players in the MLB are from all over the world. It just happens that Americans love baseball enough to shell out ridiculous amounts of money for it so the MLB is based in the United States and people from all over the world want to play in it because of the money involved.

It's been called the World Series, or something equally similar since baseball was first played profesionally back in the late 1800's. It's tradition.

For the same reason that we have to listen to all of that ESPN drab about the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets and Dodgers. They are their favorite teams, and to them nothing else exists.
