Zoology is a topic of it's own, but in most universities it has been broken down and absorbed into different departments.

If you really want to be a zookeeper, you don't need zoology courses. All you really need is a high school education and a zoo willing to train you. The fundamentals of animal keeping are set out for the keepers already by curators and or the scientists in charge. Zoo keepers do more of the manual labor involved in keeping animals in captivity and/or some training.

If you are interested, some classes that you will find helpful are
1. Basic or Cognitive Psychology - A course that will go into detail about Operant and Classical conditioning. Teach you about "motivation", reward, punishment.
2. Basic animal behavior class - Gives you details about what the science is really about. Will give you insight into animal intelligence and what they are capable of learning and what they are not. Also information about natural enviroments and social systems and what factors are important to pay attention to.
3. If offered some basic flombotamy and lab courses. If your dealing with things like water quality, bacterial count, etc. it's good to know what your looking at in the report. Your also invaluable if you can assist in taking samples or at least know where all the part are.

I had two kids go through college on Zoology. Both worked in Zoos for at least a while. One married a vet doctor and she is a vet assistant. She is working for her masters and want to go all the way to a doctor degree. Zoology covers a lot of area and you must want to know about animals all over the world and also learn Biology. Biology is often the subject that people have more trouble with because of the need to learn scientific-names and details about plants and animals that normally you might not be interested in learning. Are the subjects tough? It is not the easiest to learn, but far from a medical doctor, chemist, or some fields of engineering. Easier subjects would be in business and the liberal arts. You might get somewhere in business with hard work and good grades, you will not get too far with liberal arts per say. So, depending upon your interest and memory ability Zoology can be tough or easy. In comparison with other subjects, it is about the middle in difficulty. Unless you go on to higher degrees or marry a vet doctor, you are unlikely to make much money, but you will love working with animals at the local Zoos, vet assistant, etc.

Well Ben, the thing to do is to go to university web pages that offer a degree in zoology. Then check out the courses offer to get that degree.

A zoologist is usually a research biologist who specializes in animal research. Caring for captive animals, either domestic or in zoos, would usually require a degree in animal husbandry. Caring for wild populations of animals would require a degree in wildlife biology (or fisheries biology).
