Years ago I rode bareback when I was young. Umm.....the times they be a changing. The other day I pulled out a little mare we have that is safe for just about anyone that can sit on a horse. I was taking a lady riding the next day, the mare hadn't been ridden in a while, and I wanted to make sure that nothing had changed. I figured no big deal, I'll just hop on her bareback. Yeah....right....umhum.... Let's just say I ain't as good as I once was. In fact, I'm not sure I'm as good once as I ever was. Anyway, it was a very tense few minutes while zippy little mare shot up the road, I'm holding mane and trying to pull myself back into position, the whole time trying not to clench my legs and make her do any more cute tricks. I don't think she'd ever been ridden bareback, and she most definitely did NOT approve. Took her back, saddled her up, and she went like a trooper. Bareback is fine for those that like it, but I like my nice comfy saddle.

BOTH!!!! I think that riding both is awesome! When riding bareback just feeling the horse underneath you is the most amazing feeling in the world. Whether your riding in the ring, jumping a 18inch fence, running the barrel pattern, etc.... their all fun. When you ride with a saddle it's fun and all, but you don't feel as connected with the horse. When you go loping (or cantering) through an open field bareback, you feel like your pretty much flying. But everyone has their own opinions =)

I love riding bareback and feeling the horse move underneath me, but I also like riding in a saddle. But if I had to chose, I'd definently go with bareback, it seems so natural!

I love bareback if the horse's back isnt bony :P i have a paint filly, and i cant wait until she is old enough to ride! she has a great back for bareback riding. I also like western riding. I dont ride "show style" because it limits the horses freedom. I like both the horse and I to feel free.

Bareback is good when you are riding just for fun on a horse you know well and just hacking around or and English saddle for schooling and lessons. I usually use a saddle.

I like saddle at times, but bareback because it hurts the horse less and its fun to feel the horse's fur/spine.

Normally, I ride in a saddle, but I like bareback- however, my horse has such a suspended trot (throws you up out of the saddle- very hard to sit and throws you up on the correct diagonal) so I can only walk or canter bareback. If I trot, it has to be a lazy one, or I will be thrown forward on her neck.
Also, she is 17.2h, so it is hard to get on her bareback- I usually have to climb on top of my car to get on her back :)
You are right about those jeans on occasion :)
