I'd say it breaks

The substance either stretches or breaks depending on the material.

When the elastic limit is reached, any further deformation (stretching) of the material will result in it not returning to its original shape after the stress is released.

Brittle material will break. However, more elastic material will continue to stretch and you can mold it into new shapes. Think coat hangers, salt water taffey and steel. This is how car makers "stamp" out door panels and other parts to your car.

Any further deformation permanently changes the shape of the object. It will probably break (depending of course on how tough or brittle it is).
