When taking the birth control pill, is the "period pill"/ sugar pill really necessary. I know that you can skip them and just go month to month, but when you decide to have your period, is taking this pill necessary, since it's just a "sugar pill"
My mom and I were debating...she says there are still hormones in these pills...and I stand by that they are just sugar pills.....your knowledge?

They are JUST sugar pills, and you can skip them, but not all the time like some people do. Doctors advise you to only do it every now and then.

Frankly if you want to skip the sugar pills you should try Seasonale or Seasonique or Lybrel, the first two only have four periods a year (or three, I forget), and Lybrel says you get no periods a year.

I skipped my sugar pills one week and I won't do that again. It took forever to get back on track.

Which brand is she talking about? SOME pills, with the week four pills, DO have active ingredients.

Whatever these pills contain is not as important as the actual act of taking the pill. You see, just as Pavlov trained the dog to salivate at the ring of a bell, so does the act of taking "sugar" pills train your body to respond as though you were taking medication.
There may well be important hormones in these "sugar" pills, however, the ritual of taking them is just as important. So, its best not to screw around with them, just take them.

I've been told that they still have some hormones in them, but they aren't necessary. They are really good for people who need the routine of taking them at the same time every day so they don't mess up their schedule.
Call a pharmacist and ask them to be 100% they tend to know these things.

No they are just sugar pills.

I don't take them and haven't for 15 years on the pill!!!
Good for people who forget to take their pill - it just keeps them in a routine I guess
