I want to drill holes into the lower part of a clam shell (for an art project). But I'm worried that by doing so it will shatter into a thousand pieces. How can I make 10 (ten) nice clean holes?

Use the smallest drill bit that comes with a Dremel.
You have to tape the parts that you are going to drill through, use masking tape, this will prevent your shell from fracturing.

I've drilled a zillion shells over the years. I used an electric drill with a small bit. The most important thing I found was to have a piece of wood under it for support. And some shells would shatter no matter what I did (a small purple one) I figure those shells had a different textrue and just would not drill. I don't remember If I every drill a clam shell.

I've used a little Bead Landing hand drill for jewelry to drill holes in shells.

You could try a masonry bit and use a very slow speed with little pressure. You may need to support the underside - if that's possible - or even drill from both sides to the middle. I use these tips to drill glass.
