Ronan was actually high on our list this time around ... though we ended up with girl #4. :) Love it, by the way. A great, underused name that still manages to be simple and not completely unfamiliar (always a good mix). Great legend as well, if you're familiar with it! If not, there's actually a nice, concise version here: http://www.babynamesofireland.com/pages/boy-names-o-z.html
We would have used either the simple shortening Ron(e) -- said like the literal Gaelic "ron" root, not the separate nickname "Ron" (thus the added "e" for clarification ... "Roan" would also work, though some might attempt "Rowan" for that) -- or nickname Rory (Ronan Harvey happened to be a favorite combo, so it was an even more obvious choice for us, but works for Ronan Eric just as easily). If neither of those appeal, you might also consider something like Ari (from the R.E. initials) or Ric (from the Ronan Eric combo).
Great choice, by the way. Hope that helps. ;)

Ro-man is cute but if people hear it they may think his name is actually Roman. I agree with you about Ro, its awful. Maybe you could use Roan or Ronny but pronounced Row-knee.
A few people didn't like it when I named my daughter Eliza so I know what you mean about your mum. Just ignore her if she comments and if she tries to call him Ro, say his name is Ronan mum not Ro, every time or she'll keep doing it.
Best of luck and congrats!

I agree with Ron, or you might call him by his middle name... that's becoming more common. I say wait until he's born, and see what happens. Make a point of correcting your mother, and teaching your son that his name isn't Ro. Maybe when he's older explain to him why you don't want him to be called that.

Roe, Ronnie, or just Eric. Ronan sounds like an older name so you might wanna just call him Eric, it sounds more baby-like..

How about just call him Ronan or Eric?
When he's older he'll earn his own nickname....

My brother's nickname is Rohn.
His given name *isn't* Ronan, but we've called him Rohn for better than 20 years. I often have to stop and remind myself that it isn't on his birth certificate. :)
It might work well for your little guy.
