My friend was diagnosed with depression and I helped her out through it (along with her strong will of course).
Depression, along with any emotional state is just a configuration of biochemical and hormonal balances. The balance can be self-adjusted and can be modified by medication (with potential side-effects).
Some things that can alter the chemical balance includes diet, exercises, sleep, and simply the thought process. That is why it is possible to cure depression without medication.
Are you depressed?

It is definitely an illness. And it's very important that it's treated. Whether its psychotherapy, medication, exercise, B-vitamins, prayer, or herbs. It has to be treated because it is an imbalance of the chemicals in your brain. A state of mind is having the occasional blues. There's a difference. :)
OMG....To Cute Angel Puppy...if it were not an illness, there wouldn't be medications for it. People are hospitalized all the time for depression.

I guess I would say it could be both. I agree with those who say an occasional case of the blues is a state of mind. Good question. I am going to be thinking about that the rest of the night. The one thing I am sure of is- clinical depression really sucks. It is truly something that no one can understand until they actually experience it.

an illness that effects your state of mind. I'm just at the end of treatment and can notice a considerable difference in myself since being on medication. However, I would still recommend natural remedies for depression due to the effects the medication had on me.
